Science and data percentage calculators
These calculators cover percentage calculations used in chemistry, biology, pharmacy, laboratory science, statistics and data analysis. Whether you are an A-level student calculating the percent water in a hydrated salt, a researcher expressing gene expression as a fold change, or an analyst building a frequency distribution from survey data, all ten calculators include step-by-step workings aligned to UK educational and professional standards.
Mass Percent Calculator
Find the mass percentage of a solute in any solution or mixture. Enter solute mass and total mass for an instant result with step-by-step workings.
Percentage Strength Calculator
Calculate % w/v (grams per 100 mL), % w/w (grams per 100 g) and % v/v (volume per 100 mL) concentrations for pharmacy and laboratory use.
Percent Water Calculator
Find the percentage of water in a substance using basic mass entry or the A-level hydrate crucible method for hydrated salts such as CuSO₄·5H₂O.
Percent Recovery Calculator
Calculate percentage recovery for any laboratory procedure, chemical synthesis or recrystallisation experiment.
Mole Percentage Calculator
Find the mole percentage and mole fraction of each component in a gas or liquid mixture. Supports up to 8 components.
Frequency Percentage Calculator
Build a percentage frequency distribution from any count or tally data. Enter up to 10 categories and get relative frequency, cumulative frequency and percentage.
Overlap Percentage Calculator
Find the percentage of overlap between two numeric ranges, date ranges or sets. Includes both overlap as a proportion of each range and of the union.
Fold to Percentage Calculator
Convert fold change to percentage change and back. A 2× fold change equals a 100% increase. Used in biology, genetics and financial analysis.
Calendar Percentage Calculator
Find what percentage of a year, quarter, month or custom period has elapsed or remains. Useful for budget tracking and project planning.
Percent Utilisation Calculator
Calculate how much of a resource, capacity, time budget or allocation has been used, as a percentage of the total available.
Percentage calculations in science and data
Chemistry and laboratory science
Percentage calculations are fundamental to laboratory chemistry. Mass percent tells you how much solute is in a solution. Mole percentage describes the composition of gas mixtures. Percent water is used to analyse hydrated salts, and percent recovery measures how much product was obtained relative to the theoretical maximum. These calculations appear throughout A-level chemistry practicals and university-level analytical chemistry. The percent recovery calculator and mole percentage calculator both include full step-by-step workings aligned to UK A-level mark schemes.
Biology and pharmaceutical science
In biology, gene expression changes are reported as fold changes from control conditions. A 2× fold change means expression doubled, which is a 100% increase. For patient-facing reports and publications aimed at non-specialists, converting fold change to percentage change makes results more accessible. In pharmacy, percentage strength (% w/v, % w/w, % v/v) is the standard way to express the concentration of solutions, creams and suspensions, and appears in British Pharmacopoeia monographs and dispensing calculations.
Statistics and data analysis
Frequency percentage distributions are a core output of descriptive statistics: they show how often each category occurs as a proportion of the total. Overlap percentage is used to compare time periods, numerical ranges, customer segments and geographic areas. Calendar percentage and percent utilisation are applied in project management, resource planning and budget monitoring to show how much of an allocated period or capacity has been consumed.
A-level and university applications
Several of these calculators are specifically built for A-level Chemistry and Biology. The percent water calculator covers the hydrate crucible experiment, a required practical in AQA, OCR and Edexcel A-level Chemistry. The percent recovery calculator supports recrystallisation and synthesis practicals at both A-level and undergraduate level. The mole percentage calculator supports Dalton's law and vapour pressure calculations. All calculators show the formula used and each arithmetic step so you can follow the method and learn the technique alongside getting the answer.
