For tracking project progress, assignment completion, or any goal where you need to see how far through you are as a percentage. Enter the number of tasks completed and the total to see your completion percentage with a progress bar.
How it works
Percentage completion expresses how much of a task, project or goal you have finished relative to the whole. It is the most common way to communicate progress in project management, education and personal goal tracking because it gives an immediately understandable figure between 0% and 100%.
The formula
% Complete = (Tasks Completed / Total Tasks) x 100
Divide the number of completed items by the total number of items, then multiply by 100 to convert the decimal into a percentage. A result of 100% means fully complete; 0% means nothing has been done yet.
Why this is useful for project management: Expressing progress as a percentage gives stakeholders an instant, comparable figure regardless of the scale of the project. Whether you are managing 10 tasks or 10,000, the percentage completion sits on the same 0 to 100 scale, making it straightforward to communicate status in reports, dashboards and stand-up meetings.

When to use this
Use the percentage completion calculator whenever you need a quick, clear way to express progress towards a defined goal. Common situations include:
- Project status reports: Whether you are tracking sprint velocity in a software team or milestone completion on a construction project, expressing progress as a percentage makes it easy to compare across teams and time periods.
- Academic assignments: Students working through coursework chapters, reading lists or revision checklists can quickly see what proportion they have covered and how much remains.
- Fundraising campaigns: Charity campaigns with a defined target benefit from showing a percentage towards goal, which motivates further donations and communicates momentum to supporters.
- Personal goals and habits: Whether tracking gym sessions, books read or tasks on a to-do list, a percentage completion figure gives a motivating, objective measure of how far you have come.
Understanding the result
A result of 100% means every task has been completed. Anything below 100% shows the proportion remaining as well as the proportion done. The progress bar gives an immediate visual sense of how far through you are, which is particularly useful for sharing in presentations or status updates.
If your result is expressed in whole numbers, the decimal places shown (to one decimal place) allow you to distinguish between close figures, such as 75.0% and 75.5%, which matters when tracking progress against tight deadlines. For projects where tasks have different weights, this calculator uses a simple count; to account for varying task sizes you would need to weight each task by its relative effort before totalling.
