How it works

A ratio like 3:4 means there are 3 parts of one thing for every 4 parts of another. To convert to percentages, find the total number of parts (3 + 4 = 7), then express each part as a percentage of that total.

The formula

A as % of total = A / (A + B) x 100

B as % of total = B / (A + B) x 100

Why this works: Each part of the ratio is a fraction of the total parts. Dividing by the total converts that fraction to a value between 0 and 1, and multiplying by 100 expresses it as a percentage. The two percentages always add up to 100%.

Worked examples

Two business partners invest in a 3:2 ratio. What percentage does each hold?

When to use this

Ratios describe proportional relationships between two quantities. Converting them to percentages makes them easier to compare, report, and communicate to people unfamiliar with ratio notation.

  • Business profit sharing and investment splits. A partnership agreement divides profits in a 3:2 ratio between two directors. Converting to 60%:40% makes it straightforward to calculate each person's share from any profit figure, and easy to verify that the split is fair across different months.
  • UK demographics and survey reporting. ONS data might report a support-to-opposition ratio of 7:3 on a policy question. Converting to 70%:30% makes the finding immediately comparable to other surveys that report percentages rather than ratios.
  • Mixing solutions and chemical concentrations. A cleaning product is diluted at a ratio of 1:9 (product to water). The product is 10% of the mixture, which is the figure needed when comparing against concentration limits or checking label instructions.
  • Investment portfolio allocation. A portfolio is split between equities and bonds in a 7:3 ratio. Knowing that equities are 70% and bonds are 30% allows the investor to quickly assess drift from their target allocation without recalculating the ratio each time.
  • School and sixth form statistics. A class has boys and girls in a 5:7 ratio. The percentage split (41.7% boys, 58.3% girls) is the format required for Ofsted statistics, safeguarding reports, and any documentation comparing the school's intake to national figures.

Understanding the result

The two percentage results always sum to exactly 100%, because together the two parts make up the entire total. A result of 50%:50% means the two parts are equal (a 1:1 ratio). A heavily skewed ratio like 9:1 gives 90%:10%. A ratio with non-round numbers, like 3:4, gives 42.86%:57.14%, where the percentages are recurring decimals.

The calculator gives you the percentage for each part individually. If you want the percentage for only one part, read the corresponding figure. If you want to check your answer, add the two together: they must equal 100%.

Note that this calculator handles two-part ratios. If your ratio has three or more parts (such as 2:3:5), add all parts to find the total and apply the same formula to each part individually using a different tool. For a 2:3:5 ratio the total is 10, so the parts are 20%, 30%, and 50%.

In Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets, put part A in cell A1 and part B in cell B1. To find A as a percentage of the total, enter this formula in C1:

=A1/(A1+B1)*100

For part B as a percentage, use =B1/(A1+B1)*100 in cell D1. To verify, add C1 and D1 with =C1+D1 in E1 — the result should always be 100. If you have a list of ratios in multiple rows, copy the formulas down to process them all at once.

How to do this without a calculator

Add the two parts of the ratio to find the total. Then divide each part by the total and multiply by 100. For a 3:7 ratio: total is 10, so the parts are 3/10 = 30% and 7/10 = 70%. When the total is 10, the calculation is trivial — each unit is 10%.

When the total is 4, each unit is 25%. When the total is 5, each unit is 20%. When the total is 8, each unit is 12.5%. Recognising these friendly totals makes mental arithmetic much faster. For a 3:5 ratio, the total is 8, so A = 3 x 12.5 = 37.5% and B = 5 x 12.5 = 62.5%.

For awkward totals like 7, divide 100 by 7 to get approximately 14.29% per unit. Multiply each part: 3 x 14.29 = 42.86% and 4 x 14.29 = 57.14%. These will not be round numbers, so a calculator or spreadsheet is more reliable for non-standard ratios.

Common mistakes

Using one part as the denominator instead of the sum of all parts

In the ratio 3:4, dividing 3 by 4 gives 0.75 or 75%, which is A as a proportion of B, not as a proportion of the total. To express each part as a percentage of the whole, always divide by the total (3 + 4 = 7).

Confusing the order of the ratio

A ratio of 3:7 gives 30% and 70% in that order. Swapping the inputs gives 70% and 30%. Always check which quantity corresponds to A and which to B before entering your values.
